Topics include work,
workers, the labour movement, workers’ culture as well as other societal issues,
and these topics are examined from historical and contemporary perspectives.

The publication uses the peer-review label of the
Federation of Finnish Learned Societies. The articles and discussion pieces are
primarily written by professors, docents and other academic scholars from
different disciplines and active at Finnish universities.

For several years, our publication has had an annual
theme, and most articles have explored its different aspects. The theme of the
2020 issue will be the Nordic labour movements during the last one hundred
years. The political spectrum in the Nordic countries has been quite similar,
based on a multi-party system, though there have been differences as well. A
common feature has been the strong position of the social democratic parties –
usually being the largest party in each country – and the division of the
conservative parties into right-wing and centre parties. There have also been
parties to the left of the social democratic parties – with either communist or
leftist ideologies – calling for stricter socialism than social democracy. With
the exception of Finland, though, these parties have played a more or less
minor role within the political spectrum. The labour parties have had varying
relationships with the trade union movement.

In our 2020 publication, we plan to publish articles
discussing these issues from the perspective of a
specific Nordic country or comparatively, across countries, and within the time frame mentioned above – or, should the author wish,
focusing on a shorter period. We also welcome discussion pieces on the
challenges that the Nordic labour movements will face in the 2020s together and
individually in each country, and on the challenges that the labour studies
will face.

Articles could discuss, for example, following topics:

– The ideological development of labour parties, and their
role in the political sphere

– The left’s views on joining the government in a
non-socialist state

– The relationships labour parties have had with
conservative parties

– The relationships social democrats have had with
parties to their political left

– The relationships labour parties have had with the
green/environmental parties

– Labour parties and the trade union movement

– The development of the trade union movement and its
influence on and relationship with political parties

– Culture and sports in the labour movement

All submissions must be
written in English.

Publication is currently scheduled for November 2020.

Submission process for articles

Abstract submission deadline: February 1, 2020

Submit
abstract (max. 400 words), along with a short biography (max. 100 words)

All respondents informed of the status of their
submissions: February 10, 2020

Deadline for full manuscripts: June 15, 2020

Maximum
length for full manuscripts is 50 000 characters (including references).
If full manuscripts are accepted, they are subjected to a peer review process
(double-blind review), which will be completed in August 2020.
