The Finnish Labour Studies Yearbook (Työväentutkimus Vuosikirja) is a multidisciplinary publication dealing with the working population and social issues. It includes scientific articles, opinion pieces, thesis presentations and book reviews. The publication holds the peer review certificate of the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies and is ranked at level 1 in the Publication Forum (Jufo, a rating and classification system of scientific publications). The yearbook is published both in print and open access by the Finnish Labour Heritage Association in collaboration with Labour Archives, People’s Archives, Finnish Society for Labour History and Finnish Labour Museum Werstas. The online publication comes out about a month after the printed publication on journal.fi, a platform for open access Finnish journals.
The theme of the 2026 publication is ”Labour Market in Times of Crisis”. Different kinds of crises – economic, geopolitical, health-related, and environmental – inevitably reshape the world of work. Nordic labour markets have faced numerous shocks from the crises of the 20th century to the recent disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and current security policy shifts. The yearbook seeks to explore how crises have altered labour relations, employment structures, and the daily lives of workers in Finland and the Nordic countries.
The theme can be examined from both historical and social science perspectives. We are looking for articles from different disciplines, including but not limited to the following topics:
- The resilience and adaptation of the Nordic welfare state and labour market model
- Unemployment and social security during economic downturns
- Wartime labour, reconstruction, and post-crisis recovery
- The impact of crises on gender equality and minority groups in the workforce
- Changes in trade union strategies and industrial actions during turbulent times
Peer-reviewed research articles and other types of non-peer-reviewed articles, such as discussion pieces, can be submitted for publication. The language of the articles can be English, Finnish or Swedish. The maximum length of research articles is 50,000 characters. The maximum length of other articles is agreed upon separately. Peer review is carried out using a double-blind method in accordance with the guidelines of the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies.
Article proposals (maximum 4,000 characters) should be submitted by 20 January 2026 by email to Guest Editor, Dr Ilkka Kärrylä (Ilkka.karryla@helsinki.fi), Editor-in-Chief, Dr Erkki Vasara (erkki.vasara@helsinki.fi) and Editorial Secretary, Dr Alpo Väkevä (alpo.vakeva@tyovaenperinne.fi). Please state in the article proposal what type of article you are offering. Also provide your contact information, academic qualifications and title.
We will announce our decisions on proposals by 30 January 2026. The deadline for completed manuscripts is 1 June 2026. The theme issue will be published in November-December 2026.
